The resorts in Australia and New Zealand have wrapped up their ski seasons, and the Chilean resorts are in their final stages. Some spring skiing may still available in Argentina, but it is all but over for the southern hemisphere, and the focus is now on Europe, Canada and North America.
After last season’s poor snow conditions, skiers will be scratching their heads and wondering where the best snow conditions will be in Europe for the 2007/2008 season. We saw a report that the Met Office has issued a preliminary advisory stating the Pyrenees or western Alps will be likely to receive the most reliable snow, with a generally colder and drier winter likely across the entire area. Basically, it appears you’d be wise to choose the resorts at higher elevations to be safe, especially early in the season.
Snow has already been falling in some parts of the Alps. For example, Saas-Fee in the Swiss Alps reported 50cm of fresh snow and excellent conditions. Zermatt has six pistes open, and the glacier at Tignes in France is open. Austria has several resorts open with decent early conditions.
Sadly for Europe, the best bet for guaranteed good snow conditions still appears to be across the Pond, with some runs in Snowbird, Utah already open. With the favourable exchange rate those slopes will be hard to resist. In Canada, Whistler already has abundant snow with more on the way, but it doesn’t open until November 22nd.
