Airport News - One Carry-on Bag Rule Should be History in New Year!

There’s so much to think about at this time of year. However, please don’t forget to allow plenty of time to get to the airport if you plan to fly off for Christmas or New Year as no doubt traffic will be heavy. Tight security is still in place at airports, so getting through security may be a lengthy process. Airport parking gets booked up quickly too, so don’t leave it until the last minute.  Have you remembered to take care of your travel insurance and winter sports coverage?

Here’s a bit of good news to cheer you: The one-bag rule for carry-on luggage may soon be coming to an end! It won’t be happening in time for the Christmas or New Year rush, unfortunately, but the restriction should be lifted sometime around January 7th 2008, according to BAA. Airlines will still have the option to continue with the one carry-on bag restriction, so you’ll need to check with your airline before you fly.

There is a way to get around the one-bag rule at the moment though.  Remember that anything you purchase in the airport shops after you pass through security can be taken on the plane, although there may be restrictions for certain countries so check first (they should be able to advise you in the shop). You could save money by purchasing duty-free items at the airport to take with you. It’s not a good idea to pack gift-wrapped items in your luggage anyway, so you could do some last-minute Christmas shopping at the airport and wrap them when you get to your destination. We noticed that BAA now operates a WorldPoints loyalty scheme, so any money you spend will give you one point for every £1, and you can also earn points at the Bureaux de Change. If you plan to do a lot of shopping there you might want to register for WorldPoints before you leave home for additional benefits and offers.  (I happen to be a fan of Loyalty cards myself!).

BAA also has a Shop and Collect service for travel within the EU, so you can purchase items and leave them to be collected on your return. BAA airports include London’s Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Southampton and Naples.  For more airport information click on the BAA website at: www.baa.com.
