Happy New Year - But Watch for Travel News on Weather and Strikes!

We survived and enjoyed Christmas and all the festivities in one piece, albeit a few pounds heavier, and hope you did too.  Hopefully, you were not among the travellers who ended up spending Christmas and Boxing Day in hotels at Heathrow airport because of the fog.  It’s hard to imagine how anyone could cope with that, especially with children in tow. 

Unfortunately, it looks as if more disruptions are forecast with the weather set to turn extremely cold.  On top of that will be the threatened strikes.  Virgin Atlantic cabin crew still look determined to strike on January 9th and 10th and 16th and 17th.   The BAA strikes appear set to go ahead on January 7th and 14th with 24-hour walkouts and a 48-hour walkout on the 17th.   Let’s hope some agreement can be reached to avoid the chaos which could mean the cancellation of thousands of flights affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers.  Flights for the days following the strikes will also be disrupted while flight schedules are brought back to normal.  Most people should have returned from the Holidays before the strikes hit, but they would affect the thousands heading off to the slopes or to winter sunshine spots.   

The weather forecasts are for freezing temperatures arriving courtesy of winds from Siberia, along with ice, sleet and snow for the latter part of this week, and then returning next week just in time for everyone trying to return to work! The gritter trucks will be out in force, and we can only hope that the airports and transportation systems will do their best to cope and keep everything up and running.   Stay warm - and good luck if you are travelling and get caught in all this.
