Airport and Travel News - January 2008

2008 has started off with the usual mixture of good and bad news.

Good news is that BAA has called off the three strikes it had planned for January which would have meant massive disruption for thousands of travellers.

The bad news is for those with plans to holiday in Kenya.  Due to the current political unrest the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued a warning not to visit Kenya unless absolutely essential.  For up-to-date information check the website at www.fco.gov.uk.  The problems are bound to damage Kenya’s tourism industry for some time to come but watch for bargains once things return to normal.  If you have plans to fly to Kenya any time soon and haven’t already done so, you’ll need to contact your travel agent or tour operator to see what can be done in the way of a refund or alternative holiday.

Bad news for the Stansted-based business-class airline MAXjet which folded just before Christmas.  It’s sad news for those who enjoyed its services, but good news for its rival, Silverjet, which is based at Luton airport and flies to New York and Dubai (www.flysilverjet.com). There are rumours that Silverjet has plans to expand and add several more routes soon, so keep an eye on their website. If you have tickets booked with MAXjet check their website for information on re-scheduling your flights: www.maxjet.com.   Silverjet will be sharing the orphaned MAXjet customers with Eos airline which operates an all-business class service from Stansted to New York www.eosairlines.com.  We’ve seen reports that Virgin Atlantic and BA have future plans to compete for a piece of the pie by starting up their own all-business-class flights.
