Super Breaks - the New Travel Trend
According to travel industry reports ‘super breaks’ are the latest hot travel trend. People are jetting off on long weekends to places like Dubai, the USA and Hong Kong! Is this demand for such frantic long- and mid-haul trips a response to workers being too overworked (or too afraid) to take their full holiday entitlement and have a proper holiday?
I just wondered, because the news also reports that many managers and senior staff are working more than an extra hour each day above their normal paid hours to meet deadlines and keep up with their work. Are they afraid of losing their jobs or being demoted or replaced if they dare to take their full holiday entitlement? In response, a union campaign has been started to raise the awareness of employers to the detrimental effect that overwork has on the health and wellbeing of workers. After a long weekend super break there must be a lot of bleary-eyed and jet-lagged workers gathering round the office coffee machines on Monday mornings!
While the travel industry promotes super breaks and air travel in general, the news is also full of reports about increased efforts being made to alert the public and travel companies to the reality of global warming and climate change. Perhaps all the carbon offsetting programs are a guilt response to super breaks?
The popular saying used to be that you should make the most of each day as you never know when you might get run over by a No.10 bus. In today’s speeded-up world overworked executives have to rush off on super breaks to see the world and worry about getting hit by falling spy satellites!
