British Airways Strike and News

It looks as if British Airways pilots have voted to strike but there are still hopes that an agreement will be reached to avoid the action. Let’s hope so, especially as the proposed strike dates might encompass the Easter holiday period.

BA is also raising the fuel surcharge on its medium- and long-haul flights from February 25th.  For flights of nine hours or less the surcharge will increase by £5 each way and £6 each way on flights of more than nine hours. The fuel surcharge for short-haul flights will stay the same. Rising fuel costs are blamed.

BA has had a bad week news-wise, having also come in second in the ‘delayed baggage’ contest!  They came out as the second worst in baggage delays after the winner -TAP Air Portugal. Alitalia and KLM shared the prize for third place. The information was compiled by the AUC (Air Transport Users Council) and is based upon data provided by the airlines. British Airways reported delays on 26.5 pieces of luggage per one thousand passengers for 2007, which was up on 23 for the previous year.  Apparently, most of the problems were related to connecting flights through Heathrow, and exacerbated by the restrictions on carry-on luggage.  On top of all this, there are currently ongoing problems with the baggage software system at Heathrow’s Terminal 4.  Passengers are advised to minimise the amount of checked luggage and contact their airline before going to the airport.
