Is Air Travel Becoming too Stressful?
Many people are being put off flying because of the chaotic and stressful experience of going through the airports. It’s bad enough worrying about fighting through traffic to arrive in time, without the added stress of having to comply with the security rules and luggage restrictions.
Apparently, many people are choosing to pack the family car and travel by ferry to the continent instead. Destinations include not just the continent, but Ireland, remote Scottish islands, the Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands.
The increased security at airports is a necessary nuisance which we all understand. However, passengers may find that travelling by ferry can be refreshingly liberating in that there are fewer restrictions on luggage, plus they can actually relax and enjoy the crossing rather than enduring the trip strapped sardine-style in cramped budget airline seats. Those travelling with babies and young children are probably the most stressed-out group of people trying to negotiate their way through crowded airport terminals with tearful tots in tow. Will there come a point where people will feel they’ve had enough and it’s just not worth it?
The Easter holiday plans of thousands are still ‘up in the air’ because of a threatened strike by British Airways pilots. I don’t know all the details of the dispute, but having witnessed the horrifying video of the Lufthansa jet which almost crashed in Hamburg the other day, I think they should pay pilots everything they want – and more! That particular pilot deserves a huge pay rise for keeping cool and handling such a scary crosswind landing. Are there vending machines at airports selling disposable underwear? If not there should be, as the passengers and crew of that plane would all have become grateful customers!
Before airport and airline staff threaten any more strikes they should give serious thought to the detrimental effect their actions have on the morale of passengers – and perhaps their own long-term job security! Better yet would be for the airlines to pay their staff what they are worth and keep them happy.
