British Airways Pilots - Strike Still a Threat to Easter Travel
Yesterday saw the start of British Tourism Week. The annual event brings tourism professionals together in London to discuss the promotion of UK tourism.
Yes, the UK is a wonderful place - with much beauty and cultural heritage to be enjoyed. It is not without its problems though. Beautiful though it is, it will not help UK tourism much if visitors can’t get here to enjoy it! British Airways pilots are still threatening to strike over Easter, which could mean major disruption to the Easter plans for their passengers. The airline claims it will do everything possible, including court actions, to prevent a strike and the ensuing chaos.
British Airways is also very unhappy with the Civil Aviation Authority’s approval of major price hikes by BAA for the use of Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The rise in airport charges means that per passenger charges for departures and arrivals will increase by more than twenty-percent. Per passenger charges will be £12.80 at Heathrow and £6.79 at Gatwick for the next year - which will be reflected in increased ticket prices. Further increases are expected to go into effect over the next five years. The increased charges are said to be in part to help pay for Heathrow’s new Terminal 5, increased security measures, and future improvements of BAA facilities.
