Check Your Carbon Footprint - Support WWF and Earth Hour 2008
Being in the travel business, we are naturally very concerned about the effect of travel on the planet. We fully support Earth Hour 2008, which is a brilliant effort being made by the World Wildlife Fund to bring awareness to the problems our planet faces and ways we, as individuals, can help.
Last year, WWF started the ‘Earth Hour’ initiative in Sydney, Australia – asking that people turn off non-emergency lights in their homes and businesses for one hour. This year WWF is taking the Earth Hour event global. A week of events will culminate in Earth Hour on Saturday 29 March. Thousands of people all over the world will be shutting off any non-essential lighting and electricity in their homes and businesses for one hour – from 8pm to 9pm on Saturday 29 March. Some famous locations which will be blacked out, or on candle power, include Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s Highgrove House, Brighton Pier, the San Francisco Bay Bridge and Chicago’s Sears Tower.
Being more aware of our energy consumption will not only help the planet but also reduce our own spiralling energy bills. We shouldn’t just participate in this for one hour, but make it a way of life. Why not get involved and organize a fun local event? How about a romantic candlelight dinner party to coincide with the lights-out? Visit the World Wildlife Fund website for more Earth Hour information to find out how you can register and participate. While you’re on the site, check your footprint with their free Footprint Calculator www.wwf.org.uk or view the video on You Tube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcHz6Jv4l-g. Information can also be found at www.earthhour.org where you can access the new Facebook Footprint Calculator.
