Expect to Be Fingerprinted at Heathrow’s New Terminal 5

The new ‘Gateway to Britain’ – Heathrow’s Terminal 5 (T5) opened today, following the Queen’s formal opening on 14 March.  BAA is gearing up for expected protests by Green activists, with security on high alert.  Activists fear that T5 could lead to further expansion, a future T6 and additional runways - all compounding the problems believed to be affecting our planet.

T5 is the exclusive new home of British Airways, so let’s hope the BA pilots are happy with their new abode. They decided against an Easter strike, thank goodness, but the dispute is yet to be resolved.

The new terminal boasts designer boutiques and a restaurant owned by Gordon Ramsay, so travellers should expect to be lured in and fleeced on their way to the departure gates!  T5 is reported to be the size of fifty football pitches with more than ten miles of luggage conveyor belts.  Let’s hope it all works smoothly.

One significant change is that all domestic passengers will be subjected to fingerprinting before boarding.  This new security measure is aimed to prevent anyone illegally boarding international flights because there is no separation in the departure lounge between domestic and international flights.  BAA reassures passengers that all the records will be destroyed daily, but many are not happy about this aspect.

We’ll be watching to see if the huge new terminal solves Heathrow’s problems and puts passengers out of the miseries of the long queues and scrums they have suffered in the past.  For more information about BAA airports click on www.baa.com.  British Airways website www.britishairway.com.
