Will Open Skies Mean Cheaper Fares?

At last, the much talked about Open Skies agreement went into effect on March 30 2008.  Frequent travellers will be watching to see whether the increased competition between airlines will translate into lower fares.

The Open Skies agreement has meant the lifting of restrictions regarding departure and landing points in the UK, EU and US for all carriers.  For instance, those U.S. airlines previously denied landing at Heathrow had to fly into Gatwick or Stansted.  This caused major inconvenience for trans-Atlantic passengers with connecting flights from Heathrow.  It meant a time-consuming transfer to Heathrow and going through the check-in debacle from scratch for the new flight.  Under the new agreement there will be a much wider choice of flights between airlines and major cities on each side of the pond.
