British Airways Bans Surfboards and Other Sports Equipment on its Flights
BA has been a favourite of sports enthusiasts for years because of its policy to carry items of sporting equipment free of charge. However, if you are planning to take your hang-glider or surfboard with you on holiday this year, be aware of some changes in BA’s policy.
As of November 6, 2007, BA no longer carries certain over-size items of sporting equipment, including hang-gliders, surfboards, windsurfers, kayaks, canoes, oars, javelins and pole vaults.
They do still permit one piece of approved sports equipment to be checked for free in addition to the normal luggage allowance. Thankfully they still take (for free) skis and snowboards as well as mountain bikes, golf clubs and scuba diving equipment. For more detailed information about the requirements for packing sports equipment and maximum weight and dimensions see their website or call the airline www.britishairways.com (click on Information and then Baggage Essentials to get to the Sports Equipment section).
According to information on their website they still accept single items of luggage weighing up to 32kg (70lbs) without additional charge, but from November 2008 a flat fee of £25 will apply to bags weighing more than 23kg (51lbs).
