Does Your Travel Insurance Cover You to Use Heathrow’s T5?
We are pleased to report that our insurers will be providing Baggage Delay and Lost Baggage cover for luggage gone astray at Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 (T5). This will allow claims for essentials which BA certify are delayed or lost on the outbound journey.
However, several major insurers (including Tesco, Churchill and Direct Line) are refusing to cover claims for lost or delayed luggage or cancelled or delayed flights at Terminal 5. This appears to apply only to those who have recently purchased travel insurance for any trips through T5 following the opening of the new terminal. The insurers intend to continue the boycott until they are given assurance that everything is working properly. Anyone with travel plans which include T5 should check with their travel insurance company to find out whether they will be covered.
This is another blow to British Airways, BA and BAA. Heads have already begun to roll with the dismissal of two British Airways senior staff members over the opening debacle of T5.
The affected insurers state that they are still honouring valid claims for cancelled or delayed flights or delayed or lost luggage for those who purchased travel insurance prior to the T5 opening. However, anyone who has taken out travel insurance since the opening will be travelling through Heathrow’s T5 at their own risk. If their bags go missing or they suffer delays or flight cancellations they may find they will be unable to claim on their travel insurance. According to the Association of British Insurers, the airline should be the first point of contact for obtaining compensation under these circumstances.
We want to reassure our customers that they will not be affected and they can travel with peace of mind through Heathrow’s Terminal 5, or any other airport, as normal. To obtain a quote for your travel insurance click here.
