Travelling to Spain? Educate Yourself First and Stay Safe!

Spain is a favourite destination for millions of Brits when seeking a getaway to the sun.  In fact, trips to Spain have become so commonplace that it can be easy to forget to read-up on local laws or become lax regarding your property and your safety. It is smart to visit to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) website before planning a trip to any part of the world for the latest news and advisories.  Listed below are just a few of the problems you could encounter (for complete and current information visit the FCO site at www.fco.gov.uk).

Visitors should be on their guard for street crime, pick pockets and theft and be alert to ‘distraction’ techniques used by gangs of thieves.  Replacement of lost and stolen passports is a major problem.  Women should be on their guard for sexual assaults and the use of ‘date rape’ type drugs.  Always purchase your own drinks and do not leave them unattended where they could be spiked.

Barcelona has its share of problems too.  Thieves may pose as bogus police officers and ask to see your wallet for ID.  Real police officers will never ask to see your wallet!  On the roads watch for thieves who target foreign cars and caravans.  Be wary of anyone offering help, flagging you down or saying there is a problem with your tyres.  Keep an eagle eye on your luggage at all times, especially while distracted - such as filling out rental car forms.

In Spain you must carry ID with you at all times.  Smoking has been banned in public places since January 2006 and hefty fines can be imposed.  It goes without saying that being in possession of drugs of any quantity can land you in a world of trouble.  Hotels in Spain are required to register passport details of guests on check-in.  However, it is best to wait while they take the information, or take a photocopy with you rather than leaving your passport in reception.  If you plan to stay in Spain for longer than three months you must register.

Andorra is not an EU member and the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) card is not accepted there, so it is vital to have travel insurance, especially if you plan to do any skiing or sporting activities - which may require additional cover.  The FCO strongly advises that you should never take the chance of going abroad without private travel insurance.  For a travel insurance quote click here.  For information about Spain visit out Travel Guides section here.
