Travel Tips and Advice for Thailand
Thailand is a very popular destination, attracting hundreds of thousands of British tourists each year. Before planning a trip to Thailand, or any location for that matter, we always recommend that travellers check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) website for their latest travel advisories and updates. The site contains a wealth of information about each country which could literally save your life – or keep you out of prison for committing an innocent faux pas!
It is wise to read up on the current political climate in the country, avoid political protests or gatherings, and be aware of the possibility of terrorist attacks – a danger which exists in many parts of the world these days. Possession of drugs, or any connection with drugs is a crime which carries severe penalties in Thailand, including the death penalty. Be alert to the possibility of street crime, pick pockets, and bag snatchers riding motorcycles who often target tuk tuks. Take care with credit cards and don’t let them out of your sight as there have been reports of fraudulent credit card use after card details have been secretly copied in shops.
Women should be careful when drinking in clubs, bars or parties where there is a possibility of drinks being spiked and the use of date rape drugs. There are regular reports of sexual offences, rapes and even murder. The Koh Samui area has been the site of several problems of this nature. Be cautious about taking anyone back to your hotel room as there have been incidents of drugging and robbery. Keep your valuables, passport, bag, wallet, etc. safe at all times.
The FCO advice section contains warnings and alerts about topics such as driving in Thailand, swimming, jellyfish, scuba diving, health, employment, and insurance for driving and other activities. Tourists are required by law to carry passports with them at all times in Thailand. The FCO highly recommends that travellers take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before traveling.
