Tips for Travel to Greece - Don’t Go on a Full Moon!
Greece is an all-time favourite holiday destination for British people, with millions visiting every year. As charming and hospitable as the Greek people are, they have high standards regarding behaviour in public and antics such as ‘mooning’ are not acceptable!
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) provides a fantastic resource for travellers, with current information, advice and warnings about travel to any country in the world. We highly recommend a visit to their site before embarking on any trip abroad: www.fco.gov.uk. Click on the ‘Travel Advice by Country’ section. The following is just a sampling of the useful advice on their site, but check for current information and updates before you go.
Most visitors to Greece have a problem-free stay, but you should always be on guard against the usual types of crimes where tourists are targeted. Loss or theft of passports is a common problem in Greece and any other country (including the U.K!) Remember that there are cultural differences in all countries, and visitors should educate themselves about the rules before they go on a trip. What you may consider to be acceptable behaviour at home could be an arrestable offence in another country!
The FCO warns that visitors to Greece should always be on their best behaviour. The police there do not tolerate indecent or rowdy behaviour – especially if the consumption of excessive alcohol is a factor! Be aware that drinks in foreign countries are often stronger than we are used to at home. Those who violate the local rules could find themselves facing fines or even a prison sentence. It is also polite and expected that you ask permission before taking photographs of the locals. It goes without saying that you should avoid all contact with illegal drugs, as the consequences are serious!
There is a high incidence of road traffic accidents in Greece and the FCO website contains vital information about renting transportation there. We recommend you visit the site for complete information as we cannot cover it all here. Visit our Travel Guides section for information on Greece.
Don’t forget to obtain the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and take out private travel insurance before you leave. Make sure the insurance will cover any sporting activities you plan to participate in – as some may be excluded or require an additional premium.
