Advice to Travellers/Backpackers for China and Beijing Olympics
Celebrations are planned for next Wednesday, 30th April, which marks the 100-day countdown to the opening of the Beijing Olympics on August 8 2008.
The well-publicised problems and controversy surrounding the Games continue. Travellers should consult the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) website regularly for the latest information, advisories and updates before commencing travel to (and during) travel in China. British nationals must have a visa to enter China. Note that travel to Tibet should not currently be attempted without first gaining permission from the Chinese authorities. Travellers are advised to avoid areas where there are demonstrations or public gatherings as injuries have been reported.
Although travel in China is reported to be fairly safe, according to the FCO visitors should always be aware of the possibility of being targeted by thieves - especially for passports. All visitors (especially women travelling alone) are cautioned against using pedicabs in Beijing. The FCO reports an increase in muggings by pedicab drivers. For complete information, visit the FCO website at www.fco.gov.uk.
Foreign nationals must carry their passport with them at all times when travelling within China as the police conduct random checks. The FCO also advises against trekking alone in isolated areas, including around the Great Wall. A copy of your travel itinerary and expected time of return should be left at the hostel, hotel or with a friend before setting off. Visit our Travel Guides section for China.
