Travel Advisory for Greece - June 2008

An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 on the Richter scale affected the Pelopennese area of Greece on June 8, 2008. The quake was felt over a wide area, including the Ionian Isles. Structures near the epicenter were seriously damaged and there were two fatalities. Several aftershocks have occurred since the main quake and more are still expected.

Greece, including most of the islands, is situated in an earthquake zone and tremors occur frequently although larger quakes are less common.  It remains a very popular holiday destination among the British.

Last year southern Greece experienced serious forest fires due to the hot temperatures and high winds which affected the Pelopennese, Athens area and Evia.  There were dozens of fatalities.  Care should be taken to extinguish cigarettes properly, and when using barbecues or disposing of rubbish, especially glass.
