2008 Farnborough International Air Show Opens Today
The huge Farnborough Air Show is held every other year in Hampshire, England (alternating with the Paris Air Show). The show opens today and runs through July 20, 2008. The climate at this year’s show will no doubt be dominated by the buzz over the price of fuel as dozens of airlines lose the battle against soaring prices or are scrambling to cut costs as they close down less profitable routes and lay off staff.
U.S. Airline is the first to ditch its in-flight entertainment system and ovens in the coach-class galleys in an effort to reduce weight - which all translates into fuel costs. It appears doubtful that other airlines will follow suit with this strategy, but who knows. Some are opting to replace heavy drinks carts with lighter ones made from plastic and changing to thinner and lighter passenger seats. With the current obesity epidemic going on will they start charging us for every extra pound we carry on our bodies as well as excess baggage? Stay tuned.
