Transportation Strikes Causing Disruption and Delays in Malta
A strike by taxi, bus and mini-bus drivers has been in effect in Malta since Monday, July 14. The drivers are protesting by clogging many roads – including the roads leading to and from the airport, causing disruption to travellers. Some of the strikers have reportedly acted in an intimidating manner toward hotel bus drivers who are still transporting visitors. Order has been restored but travellers should be aware of potential problems. Attempts to negotiate have not been successful at the time of writing and the strike looks set to carry on. Visitors are advised to allow extra time for travel – especially in getting to the airport to catch their return flights.

Travellers are reminded that although the EHIC is valid in Malta it may not cover all medical costs and does not cover emergency repatriation so it is wise to take out travel insurance. For a quote click here.

I know this comment is not directly related to Malta or Industrial action but still about delays. I’m looking at buying travel insurance for my holiday and lots of companies quote for all levels of cover but all have the same overriding exclusion on their policies. They exclude any acts of terrorism and security delays. Why is this? I know security is tighter now but for good reason. My family and I, along with countless thousands got got stuck at Heathrow last year when the airport was shut. Also, what’s to stop some nutter driving another car into our airports this summer? If it’s going to happen again now’s the time? Personally, I don’t relish the thought of sleeping in the airport again whilst the airlines and insurance companies say there’s nothing they can do cos we don’t cover you for security or terrorism threats.
