Hurricane Reaches Gulf Coast of Texas/Mexico - Hello Dolly!
This has nothing to do with country songbird Dolly Parton. Tropical Storm Dolly is no sweet southern belle – especially since being upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane which has gone ashore at the Mexico/U.S. northern border today. Heavy rain, winds of up to 95 mph, and flooding are expected across north-eastern Mexico and the South Texas coastline over the next few day. The Brownsville to Corpus Christi area will be especially affected and in Mexico the area north of Rio San Fernando. Visitors are advised to pay attention to weather reports and advice issued by local authorities. Flights into some airports in southern Texas, including Austin, San Antonio and Houston may be disrupted. Those with plans to travel to the affected areas should obtain up-to-date advice before setting off.
Emergency services are on standby for evacuations. Power outages are affecting some areas and the causeway between mainland Texas and South Padre Island is currently closed.
