Top Ten Questions about Travel Insurance
Travel and Ski Insurance policies can be confusing – and each policy is different - but an answer is always at hand! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQ) encountered at Travel Insurance Direct:
1. Q. You’re at the airport and forgot to purchase insurance. Is it too late?
A. Yes and No. Most travel insurance companies can only issue policies if you are still in the UK or Ireland. Once you have passed through security you have technically left the country so before this point, yes; after this point, no.
2. Q. You have an embarrassing medical condition. Must you disclose it?
A. If you don’t mention a medical condition you run the risk of not being able to claim for certain parts of the insurance. Travel Insurance Direct has an online screening system where you seldom have to speak to anyone to get a medical condition covered, so this is a good way to go if you find it dificult to talk about your condition.
3. Q. Are MP3 players and iPods covered?
A. In most cases such items are considered to be ‘Valuables’. The ‘Schedule of Cover’ will tell you what the Valuables cover is and a check of the ‘Meanings of Words’ will usually tell you if a particular item is covered.
4. Q. Does Ski Insurance cover emergency airlift?
A. Air ambulance expenses are usually covered (as with Travel Insurance Direct) although seldom will you find Search and Rescue included on a Ski Insurance policy. If in doubt – ask!
5. Q. Does Ski Insurance cover off-piste skiing?
A. This can vary. Some companies require you to have a guide, some will exclude off-piste skiing, and some will include it provided there are no warnings posted.
6. Q. Are you covered to work while travelling?
A. Probably, but only for casual manual work. Policies vary, with most covering work at ground level (not up ladders or scaffolding) and not involving machinery. This might also include bar work. Again, it is important that you check first.
7. Q. Does insurance cover sporting or hazardous activities while abroad?
A. Companies invariably have a list of activities which they will cover you for. Some may charge a premium and some may restrict the cover for such activities.
8. Q. What if a family member is ill and you have to cancel your holiday?
A. If your insurance has ‘Curtailment’ cover (and most standard policies do) then provided they weren’t ill before you purchased the insurance the answer is probably, yes.
9. Q. Which is the best type of policy – Single Trip or Multi-Trip?
A. Annual Multi Trip Insurance is becoming more and more popular. Usually if you are going on more than two trips in a twelve month period then Annual Insurance is going to be worthwhile - otherwise stick with Single Trip insurance.
10. Q. How soon before travelling should you buy Travel Insurance?
A. You should take out insurance as soon as you have something to insure, that’s to say as soon as you have booked your trip. On Single Trip policies most companies will protect against cancellation through sickness, injury, etc. free from the time you purchase the insurance. On an Annual policy it is slightly different and you would have to start the twelve month clock ticking in order to be covered.
