More Holiday Chaos as the XL Group Goes Bust

Another huge shock for the travel industry today with the XL Group going into administration.  With more than 80,000 holidaymakers currently abroad, unhappy customers arriving at airports to find their holiday has been cancelled, and many thousands with holidays booked which are no longer valid, this is an unhappy day for all concerned.

The XL group includes Excel Aviation, Aspire Holidays, Freedom Flights, Kosmar Holidays, The Really Great Holiday Company (trading as Cruise City, Excel Holidays, The Florida Skytrain, Transatlantic Vacations, Travel City Direct and Travel City International).

According to reports, the group has gone into administration as a result of a failure to obtain funding caused mainly by the price of fuel and the general state of the economy.  All flights and holidays have been cancelled and aircraft have been grounded.  Information and advice to affected customers is available on the XL, CAA and ATOL websites.  The Foreign Office is also doing all it can to help advise XL customers and has issued a request that information should be sought from the ATOL website before calling the helplines set up by the CAA.

Holidaymakers away on ATOL-bonded package holidays should be able to complete their holidays with the CAA arranging flights home, while those who booked by credit card should be able to obtain refunds through the card issuer.  Those who booked flights only are not protected along with those booked through Medlife Hotels.

Travel Insurance  may cover flights only booked directly with the airline if the policy includes ’airline failure’.  Details can be found in insurance policy booklets.

According to a CAA statement: “The Civil Aviation Authority and the travel industry are working together to protect customers of the XL Leisure Group UK (XLUK) after it ceased trading.
