Travel Tips, Advice and Visas for Entering Turkey
Turkey has become an extremely popular holiday spot for Brits. According to the Foreign Office (FCO) British nationals must obtain a visa to enter Turkey, with the only exception being for cruise ship passengers entering the country for an excursion from a ship and returning the same day. Overstaying a visa can result in a large fine upon departure - which depends on the length of time overstayed, but is a minimum of 98.40 YLT at the time of writing.
If you fall in love with Turkey and decide to stay and get a job, be warned that permission must be obtained before taking employment. Those found violating the rule run the risk of being escorted out of the country, or deported.
Before booking a trip to Turkey check that your passport will have at least six months’ validity on the date you plan to enter the country, with three months’ remaining on the date of departure. For more important information visit our Travel Guide for Turkey which contains a link to the FCO website for more valuable information and the latest updates.
Note that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in Turkey for free medical care - and treatment can be very expensive. It is vital that visitors take out a good Travel Insurance policy - and check before purchasing that it covers emergency medical repatriation. Also make sure that the policy will cover all the activities you plan to do while there.
