World Tourism Day - Peru - September 27 2008

The World Tourism Organization has held a World Tourism Day event annually since 1980 with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of tourism in the international community.  Issues discussed include how tourism affects worldwide cultural, social, political and economic values.

Since 1997 the event has been held by a different host country and this year is the turn of Lima, Peru - with Ghana set to host in 2009.  A variety of events are scheduled to take place over several days for visiting travel professionals.  The theme of this year’s event is ‘Tourism Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change and Global Warming.’  Last year’s event held in Sri Lanka was based on the theme ‘Tourism Opens Doors for Women.’  The World Tourism Think Tank will be busy scratching heads and discussing the direction of tourism in these difficult times, as well as how best to help poor and developing countries (does that now include the USA and UK?).

Anyway, it’s good to know that serious efforts are being made by the travel industry to change worldwide travel behaviour, protect natural resources, and use fuel responsibly with a stated intention to reach the goal of ‘Climate Neutral Tourism’.  A new website www.ClimateSolutions.travel will be launched on September 27 to coincide with World Tourism Day. The site will provide a forum for the travel industry to exchange ideas, solutions and information regarding climate change and tourism.

Before setting off on any trip don’t forget to check the latest travel advice on the Foreign Office (FCO) website.  Visit our Travel Guide for Peru which contains a link to the FCO for important travel tips, information and advisories.  There’s no question that the travel market is changing but there will still be a need for Travel Insurance and we will still be here to provide excellent cover for all your needs!
