Alpine World Cup Ski Race Schedule Starts Oct 25 in Solden, Austria
It hardly seems possible, but the opening events for the 2008-2009 Alpine World Cup Ski season take place in Sölden this weekend. Men’s and women’s giant slalom races kick off on October 25-26 on the Rettenbach glacier. The snow is still a bit on the thin side but it has been deemed good enough and they have excellent snowmaking, plus snow is forecast for later in the week. The cold conditions are helping the snow stay put and seven lifts are currently open for skiing.
Sölden is close to Innsbruck and has a reputation for good snow reliability on its two glaciers and a buzzing nightlife. It may not be the best choice for beginners but is well liked by intermediate and advanced skiers.
