Skiers and boarders need to get busy making reservations as the season is underway.  Snowfall is looking good in many places with more expected across the Alps and Rockies later this week.  Many resorts across the U.S., Canada and Europe are already open or opening very soon.

Glacier skiing in the Alps has been going strong.  Nine ski areas are open in Norway, including Geilo.  The glacier at Tignes is the only major resort open in France at the moment.  Glacier skiing at Saas Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland is going strong and Glacier 3000 near Gstaad and Les Diablerets is also open.  Austria has several areas open, including the Hintertux Glacier – with 14 lifts operating, the Stubai glacier, Solden, with Obergurgl expected to open on Friday this week.  In Italy Bormio, Passo Stelvio, Val Senales and Cervinia are open for early skiing with more lifts opening up daily.  Currently there is no news of opening dates for Andorra, Germany or Bulgaria but the situation is changing daily.

In the United States early openings in the Rockies include Copper Mountain, Keystone and Breckenridge in Colorado. Aspen’s Ajax mountain is opening limited runs on Saturday (five days early due to the great snow) with Snowmass opening on the 27th (Thanksgiving) and Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk on December 9.  Mammoth, California and Snowbird in Utah are open.  Killington and other east coast resorts are anxiously waiting for snow.  Lake Louise and Mt. Norquay, Canada, are open and Banff is scheduled to open this Friday.  Whistler/Blackcomb opens November 27 – and make a note on your calendar that it is scheduled to be the official alpine skiing venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2010.

Cairngorm in Scotland is closed for lift maintenance until the beginning of December.

This is just a sampling, but stay tuned because if the snow continues to fall there will be more early openings.  Check online for updated information or check the website of your favourite ski destination.

In your excitement don’t forget the boring, but essential, things like Ski Insurance!

There isn’t a better approach to observe Gstaad and the adjoining regions than from high in the skies in a hot air balloon. This is usually a amazing way to capture the community, snowed in mountain tops and the valleys. This is usually a trip of a lifetime that you will always remember.
