Ski Insurance – Can You Afford Not to Have It?

It’s that time of the year again…  Snow is falling in the Alps, across the Rockies and in the Sierra Nevada range (i.e. Mammoth Mountain, California).  Whichever way your ski tips or board are pointing this season, they should always be pointing to ‘yes’ when it comes to Ski Insurance and Winter Sports cover.  The peace of mind it brings is well worth the relatively small cost of the premium.

Statistics show that around one in every seven skiers will sustain some type of injury.  It doesn’t always involve major uh-ohs like trees.  A badly twisted knee or sprained wrist can be enough to ruin your ski trip.  No matter how fit you may think you are, physical exertion at high altitude takes a toll on even the most ardent keep-fit gym-fanatic. Beginner skiers are particularly at risk as unless they have done some training and given their ski muscles a bit of preparation.  A few hours stuck in a snowplough stance could leave them too stiff after the first day or two on the slopes to do much else for the rest of the holiday.  There is a lot of money at stake too, especially if you factor in the cost of unused and non-refundable ski passes or ski rentals

No matter where you purchase your insurance, a normal Travel Insurance policy does not cover winter sports.  It is very important to check whether you have Winter Sports cover before leaving on your ski trip.  Make sure you are aware of the details of the policy and any exclusions it may contain.  For example, know where you stand when it comes to skiing off-piste or sustaining an injury while intoxicated with alcohol.  If your policy is with us don’t hesitate to call for advice if you can’t find the answers you need on the website.
