Did You Know? New Entry Rules/Visa for USA - January 2009
We have not seen much publicity about this yet - so if you know someone planning to visit America please pass the word on. There are fears within the industry that chaos will strike airports once America’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) implements its new entry rules for the New Year. From 12 January 2009 applications for travel to the USA, or transit via the USA, must be made online a minimum of 72 hours prior to departure. Those who have already booked their travel to, or via, the USA will be facing serious problems if they are not aware of the new rules and have not complied when they reach their departure airport. Note that the rules apply to cruise ships as well as airlines.
The new Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) will replace the current Visa-Waiver form given out on transatlantic flights. There is no fee for the application at present, although no guarantee has been given by the DHS regarding future fees. Those without the internet will need to access a computer somewhere (friend, family, travel agent, library, etc) but must be responsible for answering the questions themselves. Once approval is obtained the online permission will be valid for multiple trips to the USA over a two-year period. The Dept of Homeland Security has urged visitors to apply as early as possible in case of any problems. If the application is denied for any reason it may be necessary to apply for a B-2 Tourist Visa, or B-1 Business Visitor Visa which can both take several weeks, or even months.
We are concerned that all travellers get the message prior to arriving at the airport check-in, especially in view of the fact that Travel Insurance will not cover any losses or claims if boarding is denied because of failure to obtain the necessary visas or permission to enter. The new rules will apply to all countries currently listed under the Visa Waiver Program, which include Britain, France, Belgium Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Singapore.
