Travelling or Purchasing Property in Cyprus?
Cyprus is a fairly safe place to visit, according to the Foreign Office, with few crimes committed against tourists. The majority of problems occur in the popular resorts of Paphos, Limassol, Napa and Ayia. Passport theft remains the most common problem and even hotel safety deposit boxes and room safes have been targeted, especially in the Paphos area.
Be aware that although Cyprus is a member of the EU, the country is still divided by a ‘Green Line’ between north and south and the British Government does not recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The rules and laws between north and south differ and visitors should educate themselves if planning to travel between the two.
Care should be taken when investing in property in Cyprus. The FCO recommends obtaining the advice of an independent legal expert. Be especially careful in the Paphos area where tourists are targeted for time share and property sales – although there is a cooling-off period of 15 days where money can be refunded.
Visitors should obtain the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) but note it is not valid in northern Cyprus. According to the FCO, the state run hospitals are below the standard we are used to in the UK. Private facilities are of a higher standard but, unless you have private health insurance, treatment could be costly and is not covered under the EHIC. If possible, go to a state hospital where the EHIC covers emergency medical care. The FCO also warns that the EHIC does not cover all emergency treatment or situations and should not be used as a substitute for Travel Insurance!
While on the subject of insurance, note that the police in Cyprus investigate possible fraudulent insurance claims and heavy fines or even prison sentences are handed out to the guilty!
