Whistler Gondola Ski Lift Accident
Yikes! It’s probably one of the worst fears of skiers and boarders, and definitely not the preferred way to get down a mountain.
Yesterday one of the towers supporting the Excalibur gondola at Whistler Blackcomb (Canada) apparently broke in half and collapsed. Dozens of skiers and boarders had to be rescued from the gondola cars. It was a miracle there were no serious injuries, and 12 people were treated and later released by the local clinic. Some of the gondola passengers were trapped for several hours before being evacuated. None of the gondola cars actually fell from the cable, although it was reported that one car hit a house and another came down on a bus shelter. It was said to be the first incident involving the gondola which was installed in 1994. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
It serves as a sobering reminder that no matter how careful you are, accidents can happen when you least expect them.
