Skiing in Slovakia? They Join the Eurozone January 1

On January 1, 2009 Slovakia will join the Eurozone. The currency will switch to the Euro on the same date, although the Slovak Crown will still be accepted in many shops until January 16.

Those skiing or hiking in Slovakia should be aware that the services of the Slovak Mountain Rescue Services can be expensive (up to £8,800) depending on the nature of the emergency.  Also, those ignoring or found to be in violation of the Mountain Rescue Services laws and commands may be subject to an additional fine of up to £2,900.  It is very important to take out Winter Sports Cover along with Travel Insurance.

Visitors to Slovakia are advised to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK.  However, note that the EHIC should not be used as a substitute for travel insurance.  For example, although the EHIC may cover emergency medical treatment at a state-run facility, it would not cover things like emergency medical repatriation and lost luggage.

In Slovakia it is important to have your passport available at all times for identification, and keep a copy separately.  According to the Foreign Office, the Slovak authorities may refuse entry to those carrying damaged or worn passports, especially if they appear tampered with.

If planning to drive in Slovakia it is important to know the rules.  For instance, from December 18, 2008 it became mandatory for vehicle to have headlights on year-round, and speed limits have been reduced to 50kph in many towns.  If you plan on getting into the Christmas spirit (literally) be aware that those found driving with any trace of alcohol in their body will be arrested!  The permitted level is 0%!
