Travel News – FCO and ABTA Travel Trends Report for 2009
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and ABTA have published a joint Travel Trends Report and predictions for 2009. Non-Euro destinations like Egypt, Mexico and Turkey are expected to see a further increase in visitors from Britain due to the exchange rate. Other predicted holiday favourites for 2009 include Dubai, the Dominican Republic, Israel, Cuba, Aruba, St Lucia, Iceland, the Galapagos Islands, Croatia, Poland and Australia.
The FCO have expressed concerns about a potential increase in Brits getting into trouble in countries where the cultures are less familiar. Visitors are strongly advised to do their homework before they depart and learn as much as possible about the expected etiquette. The FCO website contains excellent country information, including any current problems or threats, natural disasters, transportation, local customs, visas, passports, etc.
With spending money being tight, the FCO is also urging travellers not to make cuts on essential items like travel insurance. There has been a reported fall in the amount of annual travel insurance policies being taken out, but if annual policies are not renewed it is important to take out Single Trip insurance. It is also important to obtain all necessary vaccinations and even get a check-up before departing to lessen the chance of experiencing medical problems abroad.
According to the report, 41% of Brits planning a holiday abroad are worried they will not have enough spending money - and the FCO urges travellers to always have sufficient emergency funds on hand. All-inclusive holidays are expected to be popular again because of the peace of mind they bring in knowing the major costs in advance. Due to travel company and airline failures during 2008, 35% of travellers worry about their tour company going belly-up. To provide some protection, the FCO encourages booking through ATOL registered companies.
Despite the strong dollar, Brits are also reported to be feeling more enthusiastic about visiting the USA once Barack Obama takes office. There is also an increasing trend in Brits travelling abroad to tie the knot, with places like Kenya, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica and Bali high on the list for exotic wedding locations.
