Skiing the Rockies? Avalanche Statistics No Joke

It’s no secret in skiing circles that the Rockies of North America and Canada tend to receive obscenely wonderful amounts of snow each ski season.  Skiers and boarders flock there to make their tracks in the white gold.  However, a sobering reminder of the dangers and a few words of caution are never wasted – because all that fresh snow combined with the right conditions means avalanches are a very real possibility. Check out these statistics for the 2008-2009 ski season so far:

According to Avalanche.org there have already been 13 fatalities in the USA and 13 in Canada this season;  Is 13 an unlucky number?  You bet it is – for the unlucky ones.  Many of the fatal accidents involved snowmobilers, with skiers, boarders and an ice climber also numbered among the sad statistics.
