Today is Blue Monday – Cheer Up and Start Planning a Holiday!

It’s gloomy, raining, dreary, cold and damp.  Everyone looks fed up.  No wonder… Today, January 19, has the honour of being the ‘most depressing day of the year’.  This year, many believe it is the most depressing Blue Monday ever!  It could be so bad that there have been predictions for more than a quarter of the work force to call in sick.

There can be many reasons we feel down other than the miserable weather, bad news on TV, radio, and in the newspapers about economic doom and gloom, job losses, more bank bailouts and credit card debts. What about failed New Year resolutions, weight problems, and perhaps the depressing question of whether or not you can afford a decent holiday this year. These are difficult times, no question.

The Optimists’ Society (annoying lot) want to rename Blue Monday as International Optimism Day.  Perhaps we should take a leaf out of their book.  Let’s try it anyway.  Go ahead and pick up some colourful holiday brochures and start planning that holiday or getaway now.  Perhaps it will be a scaled-down version this year, and not the exotic dream destination, but even a holiday here at home in the UK can be fun.  It all depends on your attitude, so go ahead and paint a smile on your face – maybe it’ll stick.
