Volcanoes Erupt Overnight in Japan and Russia

We certainly have enough problems here at home with the snow causing closure of airports, major roads, transportation, schools and businesses and the general depressing state of the economy.  However, for those travelling to far off places for business or pleasure, there are events happening elsewhere too.

According to news reports, the Japan Meteorological Agency has reported that  two volcanoes erupted overnight in Japan, with ash reported to be spreading as far as Vietnam and the Philippines.  A volcano also erupted in the eastern part of Russia.  Volcanic activity in Japan is not unusual and it is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire for a reason – being host to about 10 percent of the world’s total volcanoes.  Earthquakes are also fairly common, with the last major quake occurring in 2008, killing nine people and leaving hundreds injured.

In Japan, Mount Sakurajima, on the island of Kyushu erupted seven times overnight on a small scale.  Mount Asama is reported to be raining volcanic ash as far away as Tokyo, about 100 miles away. Rocks propelled by the explosive force have been found more than 3,000 miles from the actual volcano.  A level 3 alert is in place for residents within a 2.5 mile radius and entry into the area is prohibited. Mount Asama has not erupted seriously since 2004.

In Russia, a volcano located on the Kamchatka peninsula is also reported to have erupted.  There are no reports of injuries or serious damage from any of the overnight eruptions at present.  Those with plans to travel to Japan should keep an eye on news reports.

If visiting Japan, note that some common over-the-counter medicines, such as Vick’s Inhalers, are banned under their strict anti-stimulant drug laws.  Ignorance is not an excuse if you are found carrying them during a customs check.  Getting yourself arrested in Japan is not a good idea as penalties tend to be more severe than here in the UK.  Even minor offences can mean police detention for up to 23 days and bail is not often granted.  Also, note that all visitors to Japan are fingerprinted and digitally photographed upon entry.

The standard of medical care in Japan is good but the cost of treatment is also very high and visitors are expected to pay for their treatment.  Adequate travel insurance is definitely a necessity.  Visit our Travel Guide for Japan and follow the link for the Foreign Office (FCO) for important travel advice and information.
