Battlefield Tours - New Flights from Leeds to the Somme

It is nothing new that the descendants and relatives of the millions who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world feel drawn to visit the last place on earth where their loved ones were alive, or are resting. This niche tourism - also known as ‘Conflict Tourism’ has become hugely popular.   Many pursue the history as a fascination or hobby, in awe of the horrors, suffering and bravery of those who fought during the conflicts.  Some visit to trace their family roots.  There are, of course, many ways to get to France and Belgium, whether by plane, car, ferry, Eurostar, or the Channel Tunnel.

The need for a direct route to northern France for the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the area from the north was recognised by budget airline Jet2.  They are starting up a new direct route from Leeds Bradford to the Somme for what they are calling ‘Battlefield Breaks’.  The flights start in April with departures to Albert-Picardie airport in northern France on Mondays and Fridays to allow for short mid-week or weekend breaks.  This type of tour is popular with all ages, and particularly as educational trips for school children.  What better or more sensitive way to give young people, who have never experienced war, an understanding of the reality of the sacrifices made so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today.

The battlefields of the Western Front are close to the cities of Lille and Amiens, in Flanders.  Lille is a relatively new city, having been rebuilt from ruins.  In the Flemish town of Leper, more commonly known as the French ‘Ypres’ (called ‘Wipers’ by British troops) the Cloth Hall houses the Flanders Fields Museum which is filled with interesting photos and war memorabilia.  The Menin Gate Memorial is place of great emotion for the hundreds of thousands of people who visit Ypres each year.  The First World War lasted from July 28, 1914 to November 11, 1918.

There are, of course, many other interesting battle sites throughout the world, many of which are included in organised tours. We can offer a cheap quote for your Travel Insurance, including Senior Citizens, and if taking the car to France don’t forget UK and European Vehicle Breakdown Cover.
