Mexico (Spring Break) & Crossing U.S. Border into Mexico

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have issued a caution to visitors travelling to Mexico - or with plans to cross the border from the U.S. into Mexico.  Violent crime related to drug trading is a major problem in Mexico - especially the border areas.  Although visitors are not believed to be a particular target, extra vigilance may be needed, as well as keeping up with news reports.

Travellers to the U.S. should already be aware of the new rules in force under the 90 Day Visa Waiver Program (VWP).  Eligible visitors from countries participating in the VWP can visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa, but are now also required to register via the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) at least 72 hours prior to their travel date.

During Spring Break each year, thousands of U.S. students flock to Mexican resorts to party.  Places like Cancun and Cabo St. Lucas are very popular.  The date for Spring Break seems to vary, but the busy times are between February and April, with March probably being the busiest.  Despite U.S. government warnings to students about  travelling to Mexico because of the drug-related crime, it does not appear to be stopping them - according to news reports.

The New York Times recently reported that there were more than 6,000 drug-related deaths in Mexico last year, and the border areas are worst affected. CNN news reported that the problems are compounded by bribery and corrupt government officials failing to acknowledge the problems related to the drug trade.

The U.S. Department of State issued a travel alert on February 20 regarding the dangers of travelling in Mexico.  Visitors should avoid going off the beaten path and displaying valuables.  It is a good idea to leave your travel itinerary with friends or family, and check that cell phone roaming functions are operating properly.
