France Cuts Tax (VAT) on Meals – a Votre Sante!
Planning a trip to France? Foodies will be happy to hear that eating out at a restaurant or bistro in France may soon cause less damage to the wallet. A long battle with the EU resulted in victory after Germany submitted to pressure and gave its approval for a VAT (Value Added Tax) cut on restaurant mealsin France. The VAT, currently a whopping 19.6 percent, could drop as low as 5.5 percent - which is the EU minimum. It is hoped that the tax cut will give the restaurant industry in France a boost and create more jobs.
The French certainly love their food – and they do it well – so visitors to France will have no problem digesting news of the savings. It remains to be seen, however, how much of the tax cut will be passed on to customers…
