Namibia – Visitors Warned Street Crime on the Increase
Namibia has become a very popular tourist destination in recent years, with approximately 27,000 British nationals visiting during 2007 (Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism statistics).
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued a warning to visitors to be on their guard. Although visits are usually problem-free there has been an increase in violent street crimes affecting tourists – especially in the capital Windhoek. The increase in street crime has often been targeted at foreign tourists, with robberies and muggings on the increase so far during 2009. Attacks have also taken place in busy city centres during broad daylight. The main problems dealt with by the consulate in Namibia relate to lost or stolen passports, hospitalisations or road accidents.
Credit card skimming is also reported to be an increasing problem at some lodges and hotels, with Okakuejo Lodge in Etosha National Park being named by the FCO as a particular trouble spot.
The FCO recommends that your passport should be valid for at least six months on the date of entry to Namibia and have at least one blank page available. If travelling on to South Africa it is recommended that your passport have a total of three blank pages available. Failure to comply could result in denial of entry. For additional and very important travel advice and information, including visas and entry requirements regarding Namibia visit the FCO website.
The climate in Namibia is very hot and dry and dehydration can be a problem so it is advisable to carry a supply of drinking water; however, visitors are cautioned to only consume bottled or boiled water and to avoid ice in drinks. In the event of any symptoms, including diarrhoea, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Windhoek is reported to have good medical facilities but be prepared that you may be required to show proof of payment or pay for treatment upfront in a private hospital and then claim the money back from your travel insurance.
