Holiday Compensation? Know Your Rights as a Passenger under ATOL
Newcastle-based Freedom Direct Holidays, which ceased trading on April 16, 2009 (also trading under Freedomdirect.co.uk, Freedom-direct.co.uk, Holidaysyoulike.co.uk and Snowdeals.co.uk) was reported to be one of the companies which had recently failed to renew its ATOL license. The company’s failure left up to 200 travellers stranded abroad and thousands with their holiday plans in ruins.
Under the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the Air Travel Organiser’s Licensing (ATOL) is a financial protection scheme designed to protect your holidays, flights, and money - as long as your travel provider is currently ATOL licensed.
Under new European-wide regulations you are entitled to a certain levels of compensation and services. If you don’t know your rights under ATOL pay a visit to the CAA website for advice on what to do if you have a problem with a travel agent, airline or tour operator. Information is also available to travellers affected by the failure of an ATOL-licensed tour operator, or to assist in making or following up on a claim
To make sure your holiday is ATOL protected and to see a list of the travel companies that have not renewed their licenses, visit the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) - Air Travel Organiser’s website by clicking here.

Hello, What a pity this happened to cause anxiety before your holiday. The Foreign Office does not appear to have issued an advisory against travel to Mexico at time of writing, and to my knowledge flights are still operating in and out. The situation is receiving top attention and could change any time, so continue to monitor news - or contact your airline or travel agent for their advice.
Latest on Foreign Office site: “The Mexican Secretariat of Health has advised people to avoid large crowds, shaking hands, kissing people as a greeting, or using the subway. Maintaining a distance of at least six feet from other persons and frequent hand washing may decrease the risk of exposure.” Your destination may be a factor for you in deciding.
