Cannes Film Festival – 2009

The 62nd Cannes Film Festival is now underway – running from May 13-24. Visiting the Cote d’Azur at the same time as the Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix will either be your most exciting dream come true – or worst nightmare.  It will certainly hit the wallet - with accommodation being scarce and at a premium – unless booked well in advance.

Everything will be fine if your idea of fun is milling along La Croisette with the crowds in Cannes, hoping for a ticket or a glimpse of an A-List celebrity on the red carpet.  If you miss seeing your favourite star - at least the sun is almost certain to be shining.

Visitors to Cannes typically arrive through the airport in Nice and make the transer to Cannes by taxi or shuttle bus from the airport.  Public transportation is relatively inexpensive, so getting around between Cannes-Nice-Monaco by bus or train may be the cheapest way to travel.

If you are planning to make a trip down to the South of France, don’t forget that the Monaco Grand Prix will be taking place on May 21, 23 and 24 - overlapping with the final days of the Film Festival.  For more information, visit our Travel Guide for France and follow the link for the FCO Country Advice for France for important and updated travel advice.

Don’t forget to take your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) – but note that the EHIC is not valid in the Principality of Monaco (or Monte Carlo).  The EHIC should not be used as a substitute for travel insurance at any time, but be aware that in Monaco/Monte Carlo you will have no cover at all unless you take out Travel Insurance prior to travelling.
