Support the First ‘Plastic Bag Free Day’ September 12
On September 12, 2009 the world’s first ‘Plastic Bag Free Day’ is scheduled to take place.
The Marine Conservation Society encourages everyone to stop using plastic bags not just for one day, but for always. Get in the habit of always carrying a re-usable bag with you, and keep some handy in the car.
Local events are being planned throughout the UK, and towns that have already gone ‘plastic-bag free’ will be celebrated.
A Marine Conservation Society survey conducted during 2008 found more than 8,000 plastic bags on British beaches in the course of just one weekend! The bags pose a serious hazard to marine life, many of which mistake them for food.
We all want to continue to visit our beaches for many years to come, whether here in the UK or elsewhere in the world. Reducing the amount of litter ending up in the seas is vitally important for us to have clean beaches to enjoy, and for the survival of marine life and delicate ecosystems.
