Spain – Swine Flu and Driving Advice for Visitors

Spain is still a hugely popular destination for British travellers and expats.  With the miserable, rainy, summer we are experiencing in the UK so far this year, it is likely that many more holidaymakers will be flocking south in search of sun!

The recent forest fires have caused havoc across many regions of Spain and the Foreign Office has issued reminders to be very careful not to do anything which could potentially spark fires – especially when disposing of cigarettes.  Punishment for acting irresponsibly could be significant.  Make a note that the new Euro-wide emergency services number ‘112’ applies in Spain’.

Did you know that in Spain you must carry a spare pair of spectacles if you need them for driving?  Other important reminders for visitors driving in Spain include:

  • It is mandatory to carry two red warning triangles, to be placed in front of and behind the vehicle in case of breakdown or accident
  • It is mandatory to carry a spare wheel and spare set of bulbs (with tools to change them)
  • Carry a reflective jacket, which must be worn any time you need to exit the vehicle after a breakdown or accident or before emergency services arrive
  • Drink-driving laws in Spain are stricter than in many other countries
  • Seat belts must be worn by all passengers - front and back seats
  • Talking on a mobile phone is illegal – and includes pulling over to side of the road to talk

Failure to comply with these and other laws can result in hefty fines, loss of license and even imprisonment!

British nationals living in Spain or overseas concerned about Swine Flu can call a dedicated Freephone number:  (+44) 207 928 1010.

Don’t forget to take your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you to Spain, but remember that it is not a substitute for Travel Insurance.   If taking your car to Spain why not get a quote for European Breakdown Cover (includes free recovery of caravans and trailers).
