Rental Car Shortage Still a Problem in Spain & Portugal

We posted a news piece in early June (as soon as reports began to surface) warning of a predicted shortage of rental cars in Spain, Portugal and other popular destinations in southern Europe for peak summer periods (July and August). 

Pre-booking rental cars well in advance was advised, but sad tales are emerging that despite booking months ago some holidaymakers are arriving at airports and being told that no car is available for them.  Prices are also reported to be two or three times higher than last year.   If you have a reservation it might be wise to contact the car rental company to confirm your reservation before you arrive – and have Plan B in place (availability of public or alternative transport) just in case.

The rainy UK summer has prompted a rise in last-minute bookings.  Those thinking of escaping  to the sun in Spain or Portugal, especially if renting a villa in a remote location, might be wise to rethink their plans and choose a different destination.  It could be difficult to find a car – let alone an affordable car.   Major airports such as Malaga and Faro are reported to have been the worst affected.

The recession has been blamed for car hire companies being unable to obtain credit to secure enough leased cars from manufacturers to cope with demand for the busy summer months.  It is also suspected that banks believed there would be fewer people travelling due to the recession.  Whatever the reason, be prepared because prices have gone through the roof.
