Belgian F1 Grand Prix - Spa Francorchamps - Aug 28-30

The 2009 Formula One ING Belgian Grand Prix takes place this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps in Eastern Belgium, which is just 16km from the German border. Practice begins on Friday, qualifying on Saturday and the Grand Prix main event on Sunday.  Coverage of the Grand Prix begins on BBC1 at 12:10 pm (UK time).

The drivers will face 44 laps of the 7.004 km (4.35 miles) circuit to make a total of 308.052 km (just over 191 miles).  The circuit is a big favourite of both fans and drivers and arguably one of the most beautiful.  It poses many difficult challenges for the drivers as it winds through the twists and turns of the Ardennes forest.

The closest airports are at Brussels (BRU) which is approx. 110 km away, Koln/Cologn – 90 km, or Maastricht in the Netherlands.  It is also possible to get to the circuit by train or bus or car.

Visit our Travel Guide for Belgium and follow the link for the Foreign Office (FCO) ‘Know Before You Go’ Country Advice for excellent and updated travel information. If taking your car to Belgium be sure to read up on the rules of the road.  It is the law to carry a fluorescent jacket in the vehicle in case of a breakdown.  Fines for speeding are hefty and must be paid on the spot to avoid having your car impounded. Drinking and driving  is a bad idea as checks are carried out 24/7 and could result in heavy fines or even confiscation of licenses. Using a mobile phone while driving is also prohibited.  Remember to programme the Europe-wide ‘112’ emergency services number into your mobile phone before leaving home.

If travelling to Belgium remember to carry your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) but remember that it is not a substitute for proper travel insurance.  Check that your vehicle or motorcycle breakdown cover is up-to-date, as well as motorcycle travel insurance.  (Note: Breakdown Cover includes free recovery of caravans and trailers).
