Tips for Visiting Turkey & Other Muslim Countries During Ramadan
With many Britons heading to Turkey and other hotspots over the Bank Holiday weekend it is worth a reminder to be respectful during Ramadan when visiting Muslim countries.
Ramadan, which is a holy month for Muslims, runs from August 21 to September 19 (approx.) The degree to which Ramadan is observed can vary from country to country but in most places Muslims fast during the day - between dawn and dusk. The fast is strict; meaning no drinking, eating, smoking or even chewing gum. The fasting periods are used as a time of contemplation and prayer.
Although non-Muslims are obviously not expected to join in the fast, it is appreciated if some sensitivity and awareness is shown. Be prepared that some eating establishments and businesses may close or operate shorter hours. However, hotels and restaurants in tourist areas usually remain open.
If you have a flight to catch, be prepared that at the end of the daily fast families often gather together for an evening meal, which may mean that traffic will be busier around that time. At the end of Ramadan families also tend to gravitate to one place to celebrate with a three-day festival – which can also put pressure on roads and transportation.
Remember that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in Turkey. Even though the EHIC should never be used as a substitute for travel insurance it is even more important to protect yourself and your family with comprehensive cover before leaving home.
