India – Warning for Western Tourists and Visitors

There are reports that terrorists may be planning to strike popular tourist destinations in India, such as Goa, Mumbai and Delhi.  Western tourists are advised to be especially vigilant. According to recent news reports, Israel has warned its citizens to avoid travelling to India at the present time.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) does not appear to have issued any blanket advisory against travel to India at the time of writing, although there are advisories against travel to certain parts of the country. However, they state that the threat of terrorism remains high.  If you have plans to travel there any time soon we would suggest keeping an eye on news reports and the FCO website.  (This is especially important because planning travel to a country after an advisory against travel has been posted by the FCO could invalidate any related claims against your travel insurance).

As part of its Country Advice for India, the FCO warns that future attacks may occur in locations which have been targeted previously, and are popular with expatriates and Westerners, such as Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Jaipur, Faizabad, Lucknow, and Mumbai.  Possible targets include railway stations, luxury hotels, restaurants, sporting venues, places of worship, and markets – in fact, any place which might attract large numbers of Western tourists.

Of particular concern are days of special significance (which have been used to mount attacks in the past) such as:

  • August 21-Sept 19 – Ramadan
  • September 20-21 – Eid
  • October 17 – Diwali
  • January 26 – Republic Day
  • August 15 – Independence Day

According to the FCO, security has been increased at many locations, as well as major airports in India.  Travellers should anticipate delays and allow extra time for check-in.

Check the FCO website for important travel information and updated advice.
