China and Tibet – Important Advice for Visitors
Visitors should expect increased security measures around the time of the 2009 National Day celebrations (September 30-October 1). The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have reported that (according to local media) travel to Tibet has been suspended by the Chinese authorities and the ban may continue through October 10 2009.
According to the FCO, travel in the Beijing area is likely to be seriously disrupted due to the National Day celebrations, with the problems possibly continuing for a few days after. Many popular attractions may be closed for periods up to October 5. Travel restrictions are likely to be extensive with taxis, subways and public transport disrupted. Beijing International airport is scheduled to be closed on the morning of October 1, 2009.
Visitors are advised to always carry their passport with them when travelling in China due to random police checks, but to be alert for thieves and pickpockets. Also, be aware that the authorities are conducting body temperature checks for those travelling to, or within, China to prevent the spread of Swine Flu. Quarantine procedures are in place if infection is suspected or confirmed.
