Ski Season is Shaping Up – But Are You in Shape?
Just as with most things in life, it takes effort and practise to excel and get the most out of an activity. This applies to skiing and snowboarding. Without some preparation you may be setting yourself up for an injury which could ruin your entire ski holiday – and hit you in another place it will hurt: your wallet.
It’s not fair to expect your body to adapt from a 9-5 desk job to a week or more of daily strenuous physical activity on the ski slopes without putting in a bit of training. Experienced skiers already know that they need to stay in shape to get the most out of their time on the slopes.
So, if you are planning a ski trip – especially if this is your first time – and you haven’t started already, get busy stretching and toning those ski muscles. You don’t want to spend the first couple of days having fun on the slopes and the rest of the holiday so stiff that you can hardly move!
This video should give you some pointers, but check with your doctor before beginning an exercise programme, especially if you have health problems. If you don’t know where to start, it might be best to join a gym and get tips and advice from the trainers.
It is a fact that each ski season there are large numbers of injuries on the slopes. Some may be unavoidable but many are due in part to lack of physical fitness and training. It is also important to stretch and warm up before setting off up the hill each day.
If you are heading to North America for your ski trip you are probably already aware that the cost of medical treatment is astronomical. If you are heading to Europe, apply for your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which entitles you to a level of free care in state hospitals of participating countries. However, if you were evacuated from the mountain unconscious and with a head injury, it’s possible you could end up in the nearest medical facility, which might just be private -and not covered under the EHIC.
Just as it is important to get in shape physically, it is also vital to protect your financial security and take out travel insurance with winter sports cover. Compared to the potential expense of a broken limb or serious injury, the cost of travel insurance is insignificant! Why not get your free instant quote now and ski with peace of mind - click here.
